This is one of the best books I have ever read。 This is the first part of the Ponniyin Selvan series depicting the incidents that happened during the Chola period。 Each and every chapter keeps it thoroughly engaging and the author is brilliant in explaining the incidents。

This breathtaking novel is certainly a step above others。 With little bloodshed and plenty of decency， the novel takes us through a winding path down history from more than a thousand years ago with a broad brush stroke of fiction。 This is very easily the Indian or Tamil equivalent of Game of Thrones series。 Each and every main character is so well developed and every minor character has a fair bit of character background story。 The story jumps between scenes gracefully without losing momentum a This breathtaking novel is certainly a step above others。 With little bloodshed and plenty of decency， the novel takes us through a winding path down history from more than a thousand years ago with a broad brush stroke of fiction。 This is very easily the Indian or Tamil equivalent of Game of Thrones series。 Each and every main character is so well developed and every minor character has a fair bit of character background story。 The story jumps between scenes gracefully without losing momentum and keeping the listener/reader always engaged。 The audiobook version has a fair share of singing songs and background music which made me feel like watching a movie in my head。 Such a beautiful overall experience。 。。。more

I don’t think I had ever read 450 pages in 2 days。 My friend had long urged me to read this classic of Tamil literature， but I had desisted。 Why I wasn’t quite sure。 When I finally picked this up， I was gripped。 Medieval legends， warring lords， political intrigue， romance - there’s nothing that Kalki doesn’t pack here。 The action moves at a breathtaking pace and there was never a dull moment。 I felt transported to a different past， and I was glad。 This was exactly the sort of book that I needed I don’t think I had ever read 450 pages in 2 days。 My friend had long urged me to read this classic of Tamil literature， but I had desisted。 Why I wasn’t quite sure。 When I finally picked this up， I was gripped。 Medieval legends， warring lords， political intrigue， romance - there’s nothing that Kalki doesn’t pack here。 The action moves at a breathtaking pace and there was never a dull moment。 I felt transported to a different past， and I was glad。 This was exactly the sort of book that I needed to take me out of a prolonged reading slump。 Ignore the misogyny though （women are jealous creatures， brash， and always luring men with their wiles， etc）。 I think the translator has done a wonderful job - I am not familiar with long Tamil names， and they were a bit tongue-twisting to get used to， but I loved the explanations at the end of each chapter - they helped bring the context alive。 Now， I can't wait to read Book 2。 。。。more

I went into this book not expecting much， considering its atleast 80 years old， I kept telling myself that I shouldn't expect any twists or pivotal scenes。 But this one， it did much more that exceeding my expectations。 This book is easily an amazing and thrilling read。 Politics， treachery， twisted side plots， flawed main characters （quite a lot actually）， people with dark motives who for once have justified reasons， well grounded historic background and the beautiful writing style （both Tamil & I went into this book not expecting much， considering its atleast 80 years old， I kept telling myself that I shouldn't expect any twists or pivotal scenes。 But this one， it did much more that exceeding my expectations。 This book is easily an amazing and thrilling read。 Politics， treachery， twisted side plots， flawed main characters （quite a lot actually）， people with dark motives who for once have justified reasons， well grounded historic background and the beautiful writing style （both Tamil & English） that perfectly captures the exquisite atmosphere and setting of the ancient Tamil Kingdoms。 You name it， it's got it。I would recommend listening to the audiobook narrated by Nandhini on Spotify if you are a Tamil speaker。 It's really good！This book sets up a lot for the next books without failing to give an action-packed overarching storyline for itself at the same time。 This just raised the bars so high for the upcoming movie adaptation of this。 I really hope they do justice to this fantastic work of art。 。。。more
